Tailgate Mount Spreaders

We rate the spreaders by the amount of weight in salt the spreader will hold. The weights vary from 330 pound all the way up to 825 pounds for tailgate spreaders. The larger capacity spreaders are rated on how many cubic yards of material they will hold. See below for a more complete description on larger spreaders.
For the home and small business owner we recommend the SUV standard or pro model. This small spreader mounts into your 2" receiver tube (the standard model will even mount into a 1-1/4" receiver) and will hold four 80 lb. bags of salt at one time. The standard model uses a manual upon/close gate type system. Once the gate is adjusted the salt flows out. To spread the salt you have an on/off switch inside the vehicle to operate the spinner plate that spreads the salt. This bare minimum unit will spread salt in a 12 foot wide pattern.
A step up from the standard model is the SUV PRO model. The unit itself is the same size but comes with a variable speed motor that runs a spinner auger. This unit will not only completely stop the flow when not running but will also spread the material up to 30 foot with its upgraded motor. It also has an in-cab controller to either slow down or increase the speed depending on the width of throw you may need.
The next step up would be our 600 and 800 pound capacity spreader that uses the same motor and controller as the SUV PRO model but has a larger capacity. These are commercial spreaders and are great for the snow plower that has contracts for a number of driveways or parking lots. The big difference between these two models is the 600 lb. unit is taller and has the motor underneath the unit and the 800 lb. spreader is low profile and has the motor tucked away inside the hopper.
The standard mount that comes with these spreaders requires drilling into your step bumper and bed. There is a kit that will allow quick mounting and no drilling. Order part number 332-0061 if you have a 2" receiver and don't want to drill into your bumper and bed. This still eliminates you opening your tailgate without removing your spreader but that has been overcome also. There is a 'Wintergate Mount' that will allow your spreader to swing to the side and give access to your pickup bed. Again, drilling will be required but it may be your only option if you need to get into the bed of your pickup through the tailgate. Order part number 354-0020 for the Wintergate mount system.
The next newer designed model Buyers came out with is a little larger in capacity, has the low profile design for better viewing and a vibrator to keep the material flowing instead of an auger attached to the spinner plate. This 10 cubic foot model (our number 332-0070) has the motor hidden inside the hopper. This spreader does not have a welded steel frame but is a double walled poly construction to lighten the weight of the unit. Material spread is from 3 ft to 30ft controlled from an in cab electronic controller. (Buyers uses the same in-cab controller for all its smaller units, only the SUV standard model does not come with a controller.) It also can be mounted without drilling by using your existing receiver hitch (or the flat surface on your step bumper) and arms that extend to the stake pockets on your bed.
Introduced in 2010 is the 11 cubic foot, 825 pound capacity, V-Box spreader that is: low profile, has the hidden motor, a vibrator and horizontal auger for all the features in one spreader. With the open-auger design of this new spreader you can now spread salt/sand mixtures. It mounts into a class 4 receiver with no bed drilling. It has very steep walls to keep material flowing even without the vibrator that is included. Sports a dual action lid so you can load if from the bed of the truck or from the ground. So if you have bags of salt in the bed of your truck just jump in, tilt the lid to the back and load up. This is by far the best design yet for a tailgate spreader but has a price to match. Bed Mount Electric Poly Spreaders
Mill Supply offers 4 different size In-bed Electric Poly Spreaders. The 3/4 yard spreader, the 1-1/2 or 2 cubic yard spreader and the 3 cubic yard spreader. All these units use an electric auger to bring the material to the back of the unit plus an electric motor to distribute the material on the road. They are all made with a rotationally molded, double wall polymer shell. They include a black, powder coated steel top frame to break up material before loaded, a vibrator kit to keep material flowing, and tie down kit for mounting.
To compare the size difference of the 3/4 yard unit to a tailgate spreader, it is double the capacity of the 10 cubic foot tailgate spreader. This is the smallest in-bed poly spreader we carry and can be mounted on a pickup or all terrain vehicle with a bed. It is available with or without an extended chute, can spread salt at 2.2 cubic feet per minute or a salt/sand mixture at 1.3 cubic feet per minute, and has a spread width from 5 to 38 feet. The overall length is 53" with a width of 48". The unit itself weighs 280 pounds.
The next size up is our 1.5 and 2 cubic yard spreaders. The only difference between this spreader and the previously described 3/4 yard spreader is the capacity and size. These units hold at least twice the amount of material and are approximately 50" wide and come in either 92" or 96" lengths. This electric polymer auger driven spreader is ideal for municipalities, shopping malls, industries, hospitals and contractors.
New in 2010 the SHPE3000 was introduced. Rated at 3 cubic yards this electric poly hopper spreader is completely self contained and has an ultra durable design for ice and snow control. The rugged unit allows for use with salt or salt/sand mixtures. The complete assembly mounts easily on pickups, dump, platform and utility trucks making it ideal for municipalities, shopping malls, industries, hospitals and contractors. Overall dimensions: 114"L x 53"H x 50"W (chute no included in dimensions). The chute is adjustable from 18" to 33" in length. The unique feature of this 3 cubic yard spreader is the hinged poly deflector lids; keeps your material dry even in the severest of weather.
1.8, 2.3 and 4.5 Cubic Yard Stainless Steel Salt/Sand Spreaders
Our 1.8 Cubic yard spreaders are sold with poly, steel or stainless steel hoppers and the 2.3 cubic yard spreader is sold in stainless steel only. The spreader is driven with a 10.5 HP gas engine. Used for spreading salt and sand these ultra-durable spreaders are designed for ice and snow control. Uses an electric throttle control that allows for full-range throttle settings in the cab. The 1.8 cubic yard models are 96"long and the 2.3 cubic yard models are 120" long. Can be ordered with the standard length spinner chute or the extended spinner chute. Inverted vee and top screens are included with unit.
The large 4.5 cubic yard spreaders are designed for dump bodies and flat bodies with a GVW of 15,000 to 20,000 pounds. You can order one of these spreader that use hydraulic drive or a 10-1/2 HP gas engine. They will spread material from 4 foot to 30 foot in width. The material hopper is made of 12 gauge 304 stainless steel with continuously welded seams. All hopper sides are formed with a continuous "J" channel profile for added rigidity and strength. Hopper walls are sloped at a 45 degree angle to keep material flowing. Has a strong 4-section hinged top grate. The conveyer is 12-1/2" wide all steel pintle chain with all parts replaceable including the 10 gauge stainless steel inverted vee that sits over the conveyer. The bolt on spinner housing and chute has two adjustable internal baffles. The polyurethane spinner is 18" in diameter and 3/4" thick for durability. If you go with the hydraulic drive unit it comes with 2 independent hydraulic motors rated 15 GPM at 1500 psi. The gas powered units use a 10.5 HP Briggs and Stratton engine.
